Kansas Underground Utility Damage Prevention Law Changes

 How does this impact you and your work? 

The excavation ticket life will be extended from 15 calendar days to 20 calendar days. 

  • Please remember when filing a locate request to describe only the area in which the proposed excavation can be completed within the 20 calendar days. To keep the locate request valid for any period longer than 20 calendar days, an “update” ticket must be requested no later than the 17th calendar day to keep it active. Remember that weekends and holidays do not count toward the 2 full working day waiting period. 

The definition of whitelining has been updated to include electronic whitelining. 

  • In addition to physically marking the route or boundary of the proposed excavation site with white paint, white stakes or white flags, excavators may now identify their excavation route/boundary by other technology developed for such purposes. 

Damages must now also be reported to Kansas 811. 

  • ANY/ALL damages and/or disturbances of a utility must be reported to the facility owner/operator AND Kansas 811. This includes but is not limited to: full cuts, sheath/coating scuffs, bent or kinked lines, pulled lines from original location, and tracer wire. 
  • If gas, hazardous liquid/material or electrical sparks are present, call 911 first!

Pancake 5k Presented by Kansas 811

What: 5k fun run/walk

When: Saturday, November 25, 2023

Where: Sedgwick County Park [google map]

Who: YOU!

Join us Saturday November 25, 2023 at Sedgwick County Park for the greatest breakfast run in the history of Wichita!  Kansas 811 is proud to present the Pancake 5K, which will include all you can eat pancakes, sausage,  and MORE!  You can register for a certified 5K course or do the 1-mile walk alone or with your family and friends. Children 5 and under are free! It will be an amazing morning that will allow you to burn calories during the run and then put them right back on with the most delicious pancakes.

The 5K is chipped timed and will provide awards.  Awards are given to the top 3 overall and age groups (male and female).  All participants will receive a custom race bib with RFID timing chip, event shirt, and beautiful finisher medal.

When a meet is requested by an excavator, an affected operator shall make a reasonable effort to attend the meet at the proposed date and time, or contact the excavator before the meet and reschedule for a mutually agreed upon date and time.
