Bringing Underground Utility Safety to Classrooms and Youth Organizations
Launched in September 2025, Kansas 811’s education program is partnering with teachers and community leaders to bring underground utility safety to life for students in 3rd through 5th grades. Through an engaging, age‑appropriate presentation, children learn how safe digging protects the essential utilities that keep our world running, including electricity, water, gas, and communications.
Even better, we bring this program directly to your school or organization at no cost. Our goal is to support you in building safety awareness early, empowering kids with knowledge they’ll carry into their communities and future careers.
What to Expect
Kansas 811 staff will visit your school or organization to deliver a 35–45 minute interactive presentation designed specifically for 3rd through 5th graders.
Each child will receive a brochure with Kansas 811 Safe Digging Tips and Activities as well as a keychain or our mascot, Dorothy, the safe digging dog.
What do educators think about the program?
“Keely did an AMAZING JOB!! The students were very engaged during her presentation and curious about natural gas, how to properly mark areas for various projects, and even job possibilities. The students enjoyed the slideshow and looking through the material that was left for them. Dorothy was a big hit! Keely took time for the kids to ask questions during the presentation and listen to their stories.”
“At our fundraising event, Hornet Hustle, students saw some white flags in the ground and they said that someone must be planning a dig. 🙂 It was actually markers for runners to see their lane. It shows that what was presented had real world application.”
“The students really enjoyed talk about the different flags! I think this will help them tell their parents about the importance of calling 811.”
